HELPFUL INFO

Lost Wax Casting-

A three-dimensional wax carving is attached to the base of a mold by a sprue. Plaster is poured into the mold and then, upon hardening, is put into a kiln where the wax is "lost" or burnt out. The shape of the design is left imprinted into the plaster. The mold is attached to a centrifugal machine and metal is melted in a crucible until it turns to liquid. It is quickly poured into the plaster mold and spun around so quickly the liquid metal shoots into the mold and hardens within seconds .The pressure of the centrifugal force allows the metal to reach even the smallest areas of the mold giving precise detail to the designs. The mold is broken open after being doused in water and the raw casting is ready to be finished for jewelry.

Our Japanese Motif bracelet is made of solid sterling silver castings that were carved in wax and cast using the lost wax casting process. The motif is a design based off of the many textiles and patterns Olga experienced living in Japan as a child as well as the written characters of the Japanese language. The strong influence of Japanese design is subtly present in much of Olga's work. This bracelet has a matching necklace (see Necklace page).
